Hengoed Park provides care and support for people with early to mid-stage dementia. Staff receive extensive training to ensure they have the skills to provide high standards of dementia care. We understand that every dementia journey is different and tailor our care to each individual. Our approach is based on David Sheard’s ‘Feelings Matter Most’ model of dementia care.
The environment is homely, bright and airy with plenty of privacy and independence alongside access to care, community activities and a range of facilities including a gymnasium, library, coffee shop and 12-acre nature park.
Residents’ rooms are equipped to a high standard, and many have beautiful views over our nature park and out into Swansea Bay. Each resident has access to comfortable lounges and regular in-house activities and events including garden parties and visiting entertainers.
Meals, cakes and snacks can be prepared in the open plan living areas which have their own snack kitchens or are prepared in our main kitchens by our dedicated team of chefs, using the best local, seasonal ingredients and taking residents’ individual tastes into account.
Our ground floor is a designated dementia floor for people with mid-stage dementia which provides stimulation, interest, and the comfort of familiar settings: a 1940s-themed cwtch where favourite songs play on the radiogram; a Post Office, a bus stop and a tea-room. Our residents find these settings reassuring. They trigger happy memories and provide valuable activities and routines.
Dementia-friendly signage helps to orientate a person living with dementia and allows them to maintain their independence. The signs we display consist of text, images, or a combination of both and contrast with the background to be easy to read. A Dementia Lead works closely with staff and families, providing training and support, as well as building links with external dementia services in the community to ensure we are providing the best care we can.
